University of Nottingham
University Information, Campus and History
(Nottingham, England)
The University of Nottingham is a public university located in Nottingham, England. It is a member of two university networks, the international Universitas 21 and the Russell Group in Britain.
The University was founded in 1881 as a University College specialising in adult education. It was built on a small site on Shakespeare Street, which it quickly outgrew as it expanded and acquired more units. In 1928 it moved to a 35-acre site, now the Universitys main campus, donated by Sir Jesse Boot. A Royal Charter in 1948 elevated it to university status and gave it the authority to hand out degrees.
The University has since expanded rapidly, opening campuses throughout Nottingham and even internationally. It now has campuses in China and Malaysia and is one of the leading research institutions in Europe, with most of its academic output considered of international excellence by the UKs Research Assessment Exercise.

The university has a comprehensive library network consisting of 11 library sites. Unlike most university libraries, the University of Nottingham libraries are open to the public, offering cheap registration and borrowing services to non-members of the University. The Hallward Library, at the centre of the main campus, is considered one of the best library buildings in the UK.
There are also several venues for art exhibits, recitals, and conferences. The Lakeside Arts Centre is central to Nottinghams art and culture tradition, playing host to year-round performances in drama, music, dance, and film.
